A memorial poem for the victims of Uvalde

IT HAPPENED

It happened in a state where I do not live

In a town I’ve never been to and know nothing about

It happened at a school where my child doesn’t go

To children who were his age just one year ago

To a community of which I’ve never been a part

To parents I’ve never met with now shattered hearts

To those who’ll never know, for reasons none of us can see,

How they’d come to be known for what happened

At a time, in a place, so unconscionably.
